During the 1980’s, the draught and extreme poverty of the region of Cariri, in the State of Ceara, was in its worst stage, causing great suffering amongst the local population. A community leader much concerned with his people’s condition developed a movement with the help of a French NGO named Inter Aide. Years later, projects concerning vegetable gardens, basic sanitary, professional training and daycare centers were developed in the less fortuned communities surrounding the capital of Ceara with the help of communitarian association. In 1985, this group of people legally established themselves as GACC – Grupo de Apoio as Comunidades Carentes (Group in support of the communities in need* - roughly translated), serving Fortaleza and the hinterland of Ceara. In 1992 gained more support throughout a French NGO called Essor, and in 1995 came another French NGO called Partage (por Lês Enfants du Monde). Both NGOs remain a part of Gacc until this day.
